Calmer Waters - A Poem

It's been a long time since I've done this, but I was inspired this morning after a conversation with a friend:

Calmer Waters

I watched as they got caught up in the current
Their bright colors swirling and spinning in the fluxes and flows
Their dance only disrupted amongst the rocks and white caps
Some choosing rougher waters, some forced
Some choosing calmer tributaries, others by chance
Some became stuck in rougher waters –
          tangled among fallen debris,
         snagged on rocks,
         stuck in the muck,
         color fading and
         dissolving among the dark depths
Some would break free
         changed by entanglements
         altered and scarred
         … stronger from the experience
Some would pass by these obstacles –
         unscathed,
         undamaged,
         … unchanged
Continuing their journey downstream to calmer waters
I watched as one of them, a radiant bright green
Became trapped upon a rock
I spoke to my creator
         “If it breaks free -
I know I’ll be ok.”
I watched as the bright green was beat against that rock
         Unable to move
         Hammered and disabled
I knew its fate –
         its color would fade
till it was lost to the depths below
… Forgotten
I turned to go and out of the corner of my eye caught the color shift
that radiant green started to move
It slowly became unenslaved from its prison
Mostly intact but bouncing among the white caps
         Jostled among the waves
         joy in its dance
         beauty in its strength
before floating down to calmer waters.
“Float down to calmer waters,”
         whispered My Creator.

I've recently caught myself seeking out waterfalls as a destination to hike to. Apparently, waterfalls symbolize the process of letting go and a cleansing of self. In the Bible they are used as the pouring out of God's grace, and since Psalms was mostly written by David, I like to think it can be a pouring out of God's favor.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us..." (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)

"Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me." (Psalms 42:7 NIV)
